Mastering waves in matter

Waves transfer energy without transferring matter. From seismic waves to sound waves, waves provide information to help us understand the world around us. Waves are used every day in both simple and complex processes and technologies, such as echolocation, sonar, and ultrasound imaging. In this course you will review the properties of waves, noting key definitions and practising calculations using the wave speed and time period equations. You will discuss how waves behave when they encounter a boundary: reflecting, refracting, or diffracting. Finally, you'll explore how sound waves are used in sonar and ultrasound scans and how different objects absorb energy in different ways. This course revises essential definitions, formulae and concepts before applying this knowledge to real GCSE past paper questions. You will practise critical skills that can be utilised across the GCSE Physics course, improving your techniques and building your confidence to tackle your exams.

GCSE Physics exam preparation (all exam boards)

GCSE Physics can be a challenging subject to revise as you need both numerical and writing skills. You'll need to be able to calculate specific quantities accurately, and interpret the meaning of a question and write detailed, coherent answers. This course is designed for all exam boards. Each session will focus on a specific type of question, including calculations, long answer (6-mark) questions, and questions relating to the required practicals. In this way, your tutor will support you to develop techniques to analyse what the question is asking you to do, and how to provide a concise and structured answer. You will also be revising core course content as you work through these questions. By the end, you should feel confident and ready to tackle your GCSE Physics exams.

English

Fundamentals of creative writing

Understanding the fundamentals of creative writing is a key skill for GCSE English. As well as giving you the opportunity to use your imagination, it increases your understanding of what makes a piece of creative writing successful. It encourages you to explore how to engage your reader and how to persuade them to think or feel in a certain way. In this course you will learn how to structure a narrative to engage your reader through mood, atmosphere, character, language, and sentence choices. You'll learn about the importance of showing your reader rather than just telling them the story. As well as this, you will get the chance to respond to a writing prompt in preparation for an exam-style question.
