Chemistry

Deep dive: Structure, bonding and the properties of matter

Bonds underpin Chemistry and define the properties and structures of the world around us. There are many different types of chemical bonds, all linking to how the electrons are organised within atoms. You will learn to describe and explain the main types of bonding. You will learn why atoms bond with each other, and how to name and describe the different types of structures. You will draw dot and cross diagrams that explain how bonding takes place. You will recognise different structures, describe the forces that hold them together, and explain how this affects their properties. Your tutor will help you to use subject-specific terminology to explain the properties of different structures. They will support your use of exam questions to help you practise these skills. Your tutor will give you personalised feedback on your explanations and diagrams, to make sure you are confident in these fundamental principles.
